Managing The Finances Of A Paranoid Schizophrenic

23rd April 2013

As a Corporate Appointee or Court of Protection Deputy, managing the finances of a Paranoid Schizophrenic can present an interesting but challenging task.

Whilst the Money Carer Foundation provides support for all manner of different service users, all with varying levels of capacity and understanding; clients who suffer from Paranoid Schizophenia by their nature have a very real but altered sense of the world surrounding them.

Given their altered sense of reality it is important, when managing the finances of a Paranoid Schizophrenic, to strike a balance between indulging their fantasies and standing firmly in the real world. Striking this balance is essential in order to maintain a relationship of trust with the service user, whilst also ensuring they are provided with the support they need in order to live a happy and importantly safe life.

Both in the roll of Corporate Appointee or Court of Protection Deputy, the challenges of working with clients who suffer from Paranoid Schizophrenia demands a delicate understanding of the individual concerned and all of their needs and idiosyncrasies. This requires constant sensitivity towards the altered perceptions of the service user and consideration of their needs to manage their property and affairs for their full benefit.

Working within the Money Carer Foundation has allowed me to work with a number of clients, all with different needs, and those clients suffering from Paranoid Schizophrenia have given some of the biggest satisfaction having seen the positive effect the Money Carer Foundation has had on the clients' day to day life.
