Vaccine shortage leaves elderly at risk
Millions of elderly people could be at risk of Shingles following a shortage of the vaccine for the condition. Doses are now only available on private prescription.
In 2010 Government advisors said everyone aged 70 to 79 should be offered the jab against the painful skin condition, which related to chicken pox. More then 4 million elderly people would have been eligible for the vaccine, however there is not enough vacine available because it is difficult to make and manufacturers are already at full capacity.
Makers are now trying to increase production but it is not known how long this will take. Following discussions with the Department of Health, vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur has decided to make its stock of 60,000 doses available to private patients.
