Money Worries Affecting Carers Health And Wealth

Money worries have left many Carers of elderly, sick or disabled people ill and struggling to cope. A poll of 4250 Carers by Carers UK found many had lost earnings because of their responsibilities and around a third were living on their bank overdrafts.

Paying for extra medicines, transport and specialist equipment had actually left 45 per cent of carers penniless or in debt at one time or another. Some said they were being forced to cut back on food, clothes and heating in order to make ends meet. Social lives are also suffering, with three-quarters of carers seeing less of family and friends and taking fewer holidays.

In addition, the poll found that the isolation and stress of looking after an elderly, sick or disabled person leads to 76 per cent of Carers suffering problems such as anxiety and depression, and 47 per cent worrying about money. Around 6.4 million people in the UK provide unpaid care for a friend, relative or neighbour, saving the UK economy £119bn every year.

Figures published in November 2011 revealed that NHS spending on carers had actually dropped by £2.4million despite ministers promising £400m to help over five years. Carers looking for information or support can contact the Carers UK advice line on 0808 808 7777.
